"St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popularmartyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her."
"By the 15th century, it had evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").

Social networking: Vine

The new 'hit thing' was released a few days ago and is already the talk of the town. Vine is a smartphone app, users can create videos with it, which when edited, becomes a 6 second animated gif format that loops.

Acquired by Twitter it can be embedded in a tweet, with the 140 character limit of Twitter. Very easy to use, no editing required – you just hold down the screen to record new clips and it ties them all together in the end. Then you share them to your feed just like instagram. Unfortunately it looks like there is some issues and disagreement with facebook usage... Let's see how it unfold.

" Vine is the best way to see and share life in motion. Create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends and family to see." - iTunes

Read more about Vine on:

Have a look, see what you think, know what's it all about, have some video fun or move on if not interested! I am gonna give it a go and see... :)

The healthy bakery

Yesterday, our afternoon play date at the park was a bit more "deluxe" then usual, we brought in cappuccino coffees and some treats from the recently-launched Skinny Genie Bakery located in Al Quoz.

We shared a selection of tasty, freshly bakes muffins all made 100 per cent gluten-free, using unrefined sugar, natural and organic ingredients, and no preservatives. The mini size muffins was just perfect to campaign our afternoon coffee. We tried different flavors combinations like apple, cinnamon, chia seeds and walnuts (our favorite), cranberry, barberry, lemon and sunflower seeds, raspberry and double dark chocolate and some more... You get the idea! It was not your typical boring muffins...

Catering for home or office, I believe it will be a hit at children birthday parties. Following the trend of parents being committed to providing healthy and organic option to their guests.

Skinny Genie also bakes cakes, madeleines and a range of cookies, such as Goji berries, pineapple, double chocolate chip and cranberry & raisins. For the full menu and deliveries log onto or call 800-SKINNY. Skinny genie treats are also available at The Archive, Caribou Coffee, Raw Coffee and more to come... Bon appétit!

Zesty Gifts

Another little happy find... S*UCE Gifts shop opened in the new Al Wasl Square opposite
Safa park. I am girl, I like S*UCE boutique. I rarely buy anything though, just the occasional gift.
Well now, I get a store dedicated to just that!

As expected the boutique is lovely, sweet and quirky. You will find lots of goodies (lifestyle items and home interior accessories) to make your girlfriends thankfully happy or to treat yourself with a little pick me up delight. Happy gift shopping!

A visit from Peter Rabbit in babyGAP

I might be catching a bit late on the news but in case you don't know... GAP is launching a limited-edition clothing and accessories collection, inspired by Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit book.

Luella brings home Beatrix Potter's books from the school library every week and Peter Rabbit is always a hit! I even told her to choose something different (for a bit of variety) but she seems to be appealed by the illustrations. I look forward to show her the collection in store. It includes soft knit graphic bodysuits, bright coloured denim, and whimsical cardigans, shirts and patterned dresses. The press photos show a collection featuring cute rabbit faced sweaters, adorable duckling hats and woodland themed printed cotton dresses and skirts.

"Drawing from Potter's mischievous characters and magical adventures, the babyGap collection brings to life a modern interpretation of the enchanting world of Peter Rabbit through imaginative gifts for girls and boys from newborn to 24 months."
I think the limited-edition collection looks simply adorable, and I think these pieces would make great gifts. Too bad Luella is too grown up for it! We will have to make someone else happy! :)

Collection in GAP kids stores from January 20th.

From Artist to Scientific

Another fun afternoon at Apple Seeds Dubai! Yesterday Luella took part of a new class called "Beakers and Brushes", a combo class of the already popular "My Chelsea art opening" and a fun science experimenting class called "Ooohhh Aaahh Iiiccckkk". It's a grand total of 1h30 of good learning fun.

We started with Mrs Claudia, an experienced art lover who told us about mixing primary colors to make secondary colors. We got to experience painting on different textures and just getting all messy with different mediums and tools. The 45 min went too quickly said Luella.

Off goes the painting apron and on goes the lab coat. Another lovely instructor briefly explain the scientific method "Ask, Guess and Try" using our 5 senses " Smell, Hear, Taste, Touch and See". Yesterday's class was all about "seeing", with easy and friendly words and explanation we got to learn about the eye all while having great fun! From looking into a mirror to drawing the 5 different part of the eye, to trying different kind of glasses... it was eye opening fun for the 6 kids involved in the class.
The rest of the class was hands-on experiment pouring tubes and mixing with spatulas to create a green slimy 'goo' that glow in the dark! And yep, we got to take it home.... Luella lost her on the way home somewhere... drama! ;)

The quality of the classes and the facilities at Apples Seeds are to high standards, a quality that comes with a price. The Apple Seeds team is very friendly and knowledgeable. We are hooked!

Check out for membership and classes details.

Little Geeks 2

Browsing online for cool things for kids, I came across some interesting educational websites. Here's some learning, discovering and inspiring tools for children of all age. And yea, it's ok to be a bit of a geek! ;)

The kids should see this
A good selection of kid-friendly not-made-for-kids videos for all. From music, science, nature, art, cooking, technology... there is so much cool things to see out there... this is a great place to start looking. We liked The Milky Way Planets, You Are Your Microbes, a French “magic” champion, season-catcher in New York City’s Central Park, ... Something for everyone!
Seriously amazing
The Smithsonian is all about questions and answers. Seven quirky characters asks and answers every day subjects from the animal kingdom, culture, technology and creativity, artistic expression, our world and the universe...

I have blogged about Whizz before "But why?", it's a cool website, a great resource for parents with curious children! The answers provided are kid friendly. Infos that explain in simple words how the world works. Using content from experts and well-known organizations, whyzz also advises parents on talking to their kids about serious issues like death, illness, safety, and more.
Just wanted to share with you that Whyzz is now available for your iPhone! Check out iTunes, it's a free app!

Soup of the Day(s)

In our home we love eating soup, a bowl of fresh goodness easy to make! Recently, I felt a bit 'stock' into the same recipes rotation... Also motivated to eat more healthy and incorporate as many veggies as possible into our daily menu, I search online for an inspiring food blog!

Here's my find:
A lovely, well design, mouth watering website.

I look forward to try, the "Creamy Sundry Tomatoes Soup", "Kale and White Beans Soup", "Sweet Potato and Pear Soup" and "Ginger, Noodle and Kale Soup".... and so many more!

Coffee, yes please

I have been talking hamburgers now I need to tell you about coffee! Yep, here's three new coffee experiences that I have been wanting to share with you...

The Majlis, Dubai Mall

This new lobby lounge coffee shop located at the entrance of Dubai Mall Souq, a step away from Galeries Lafayette, offers unique camel milk products. I am loving their cappuccino and Luella was not sure which camel flavored milk to try, strawberry or chocolate! Also available finger food, pastries and camel milk ice cream. Don't forget to try the chocolate range from Al Nasma, the first and finest camel milk chocolate.

I believe this concept is a great way to combined with pride, local production and healthy option. Camel milk is lower in fat and higher in Vitamin C than cow's milk, according to research. It is also a great alternative for lactose intolerant consumers. Camel milk has been named "white gold of the desert"! So how does it taste? Well, it taste GOOD! ;) Go have a try.

The Majlis Dubai is an exotic arabian experience in a modern atmosphere. Thumbs up!

The Archive, Safa Park

This is one my new favorite spot, a little gem to share without selfishness. Despite being located on the beautiful lawn of Safa Park, surrounded by old palm trees, you kind of forget you are in Dubai. The old Arabic building from the 70's has been redesign by Japanese architect to give it a sleek and modern feel. The large selection of art, calligraphy and design books from the region add to the contemporary  and inviting concept. Children are not forgotten with a large selection of children books (mainly Arabic though).

The coffee shop offers a good selection of breakfast and light bites. Coffee was good and strong like we need in the morning after the school run. The archive is perfect for a quick nibble after a morning run, a lazy Friday brunch in the sun, working on your blog (good internet connection) or afternoon tea with your girlfriend while kids are running around the lawn or speeding with scooter.

The archive is also a community organization, a way for people to be active in the "park life". Check it out for more info on the offered activities, Yoga classes on the grass, morning football on Saturday, book bidding classes... Very excited about this new initiative brought to us by the people behind The Fridge, a treat!

Starbucks Drive Through, Jumeirah Beach Rd

Another new option on our Dubai map is the Starbucks villa on beach road, a coffee shop with the first drive through coffee experience to open in Dubai. Very convenient, order and pick up in a few minutes! The coffee shop is actually a villa with a lovely terrace, welcoming interior and a small era for children to draw and play.

Yummy to the Max

Max is a friendly, tasty and Swedish... treat! We are so happy it finally made it's way to the UAE. I have no doubt it will be a success. This family run business is Sweden's favourite hamburger restaurant chain for a good reason! You will find no GMO, no trans fats, no antibiotics, no growth hormones in their products, only fresh and quality ingredients.

Another plus on the menu, the healthy options like the Delifresh products with little fat but lots of taste. Max also offers meals with low GI (Glycemic Index). Might have to try their burger wrapped in lettuce instead of bread or the Chicken burgers with rye bread containing only 6% fat.

Because Max wins most of taste tests conducted in Sweden, we can trust it's the good stuff! Check out the branch opened on Jumeirah Beach Road by Umm Al Sheif St. It's bright, clean and spacious with kids corner to make it even better...

Special note: You won't be surprise to hear that Max has strong environment commitment toward sustainability! Of course it's Swedish...

Visit Max Burger at Oasis Center, Jumeirah Beach Rd and soon in Mirdiff.

We look forward to the new year and all the goodness to come. I am not so much into the new resolution trap but I like to reflect on the change to be made or the things to improve. Wishing you all the best with your own personal goals and achievements.

Maybe this article: " 7 apps that will keep your new year's resolution alive " might help :)
