Festive Market

Yesterday we had a walk around Madinat Jumeirah's Festive Market to get some of that much needed Christmas spirit. The winter wonderland created by the Jumeirah Group is quite small (located in the outdoor Amphitheatre of Souk Madinat ) but it's just enough to entertain the kids and bring a Holiday smile to everyone face. Kids will love the Christmas train and activities, like snowball throwing, t-shirt and face painting, while parents can browse the festive stalls while drinking some Gluehwein (mulled wine) or some of Santa Spicy Lemonade. We enjoyed the Christmas carols and of course a visit from Santa. Also don't miss the cookie factory special delivery of free treats.

Enjoy all this from 5pm-midnight until December 26

Counting down...

December 1st is coming up... In our home we always looked forward to counting down the days before Christmas with an Advent Calendar. This lovely tradition from Germany 19th century is a great way to get the Christmas spirit into the house.

You can get the "basic" chocolate version from the supermarket, or get the fabric version with little pockets to fill up with goodies... or be creative and craft your own version! It's a very versatile project, so much can be done...

Ride in the park

On Friday morning Luella and I decided to venture to Dubai Creek Park...

We left the house bright and early and headed toward Bur Dubai for some adventure... Away from our comfort zone of Safa Park 2.

The Creek Park is Dubai second largest park. It offers so many different activities you could easily spend the entire day there. Choose from different recreational areas for children, mini train, cable car, bicycle renting, poney and camel rides, dolphinarium, children's city, ...

We had planned for bicycle ride and a picnic... We will definitely go back and visit Children City and the cable car...

Festival of Lights

Diwali is celebrated by Hindus in India and all around the world sometime between mid October and mid November. It is the Hindu New Year and is either a 3-day or 5-days holiday. It is a beautiful and colourful holiday.

I love traditional celebration with lovely story... In order to welcome the new year, homes are cleaned and window left wide open to welcome in Lakshmi, the Hindi goddess of wealth. It is also believed that she cannot enter a house which is not lit up. Little clay lamps called "diyas" are place around the house to show the way to the goddess. For this reason Diwali is also known as the Festival of Lights.

In India, Diwali is celebrated with special food, presents are exchanged and new clothes and jewellery are worn to parties. Fireworks are also part of the festivities and are believed to warn off evil spirits.

Happy Diwali everyone!

Pediatric First Aid Course

It's been on my mind for a while and somehow I just haven't done anything about it... Do you know this feeling? That's how I felt about having a child and feeling guilty for not knowing the basic procedure in case of an emergency.

Well since yesterday morning, it's no longer a worry. I now feel more confident and I am aware of infant/child Pediatric emergency response and pediatric first aid.

Thanks to Back to Basic which is the first community pediatric first aid programme to be accredited in the region, targeted at parents and home help.

The 3 hours course includes topics like "Preparing your home for an emergency", "Respond to an Unconscious infant and Child", Choking and Rescue Drowning. The method of teaching includes videos and hands on practice on infant/child mannequins. It's a very interactive course which makes it effective! The more you practice and engage in the training the more you will remember.

I came home with a feeling of accomplishment and reassurance. I never want to have to use my new acquired knowledge but I am pleased to possessed it. You will also walk away with a copy of the really well done Multi lingual Back to Basics reference guide (First Aid for infants & children) and laminated fridge cards on CPR & Choking.

It's one of those easy thing to do... do the course... it could save a life!

Cost per person is AED 360
Our courses are delivered in Arabic/English/Tagalog and there is reference guides to follow in Arabic/English/Filipino/Sri Lankan/Indonesian.

My fake Golden Glow

Today's post is not about the kids... it's about you ladies.

Couple of days ago, I was fortunate to get a free "healthy glow" experience! It was my first spray tan try out. I was not into sunless tanning because of the misconception around it, like turning into a dirty orange colour and smelling like burnt toast...

Aviva Labs changed my point of view on the matter! Let me tell you more...

Aviva labs offers high quality mobile service at your home. The consultant come to your home and set up her "spaceship" looking tent. After discussing with her the desired colour to achieved, she will prep you on how to stand. Easy. The tanning solution is applied evenly with a spray gun, no streaky effect. It takes 10 minutes and the result is immediate but will keep developing for the next 8 hours.

Aviva products are paraben free and hypoallergenic which make it safe for sensitive skin. I was impressed with the oil free, alcohol free and fragrance free formula. No stickiness, no bad smell!!! Dry very quickly, I got dress in loose clothing within minutes.

After two days, I am still pleased with my golden tan. Hopefully like promised it will faded like a suntan, without the harmful affects of the UV rays. It can last up to 10 days, just need to gently exfoliate and moisturise daily.
Conclusion: Recommended!

Mobile service. Cost 250 dhs.

Picnic season

Today's blog post is a re-post from last March. Just because the weather is getting better and we are getting in the mood for picnic. Start planing... Happy week to everyone!
Do you watch the show Mad Men? The picnic scene, when Betty left all the garbage behind was funny. The writers are giving emphasis to what is considered a normal behavior for those years… Watch it here.

The pretty set up of the scene, is inspiring me to organize a picnic in the park. It’s always a fun time to share with kids, friends and family.

There are so many good tips online to help you plan your great outdoor event.

You can also enjoy another kind of picnic option.
Al Badia Golf Club is offering a stylish Friday Brunch picnic set on the beautiful lush lawns. Kick of your shoes and enjoy fine cuisine.

Sun, Sand and Surf

Today was my first "Sun Mum" class at Surf Dubai. This is exactly my kind of work out! I loved it. If you are looking for a fun work out, with a challenging experience while working on your tan, here you go, don't look any further.

"Sun Mum" is a 4 weeks programme (1 hour session per week), based on a combo of "surf yoga" and stand up paddle. This unique workout will get you fit! It promotes balance and strength with a focus on core muscle.

At 8.30, a group of ten mummies gathered together at Sunset Beach, Umm Suqeim ready to experience the "surfer life style". We started with quick warm up, followed by some invigorating yoga moves based on surf technique with the beautiful beach as a back drop. Then after some  instructions and directions from the instructors we got to the water with our gear... A board and a paddle. The paddle board is like an enlarged regular surfboard (making it is much easier to stand up on) and using the paddle you propel yourself across the surface of the water. Not easy at first, it quickly become a very enjoyable work out experience.

We all finished off the session around coffee, a healthy bowl muesli and a good laugh. Thank you Scott and Dani for making our Monday mornings so bright and healthy.

Visit Surf Dubai for more info on Surfing and Stand Up Paddling classes.
Sun Mum Classes are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 8.30 to 9.30

Taking the K-Lynn Pledge - Behind the scene

Last Thursday, my self and 25 other women (including Nathalie Shariat and Geordiebird from Dubai 92 and Simon Heng from Virgin radio) from the media were invited to take the pledge for Breast Cancer Awareness! And we did!

And you can to... Visit K-Lynn at Mall of The Emirates today until October 31st. You'll receive a voucher for a free mammogram or sonogram if needed from the Dubai London Clinic. Encourage your mom, aunt, sister(s) and all the other important women around to take the K-Lynn pledge and fight breast cancer!

Great event, great initiative! Thank you K-Lynn Lingerie for inviting me to support this cause.

Taking the Pledge for Breast Cancer Awareness

Today's post is for all the ladies of Dubai...

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, K-Lynn the lingerie specialist in collaboration with the Dubai London Specialty Hospital has set a wonderful project. ‘Taking the K-Lynn Pledge’ is a community initiative set up to promote the importance of mammogram screening tests and raise awareness of breast cancer care throughout October.

How do we take the pledge? Easy!
1.Visit the K-Lynn lingerie store at Mall of the Emirates
2.Have your picture taken or sign a K-Lynn postcard for the “K-Lynn Pledge Wall” – which will create the window display in K-Lynn for the entire month of October.
3.Take your K-Lynn Pledge bag, which includes:
A voucher for a free of charge breast check including mammogram and sonogram (if required) at the Dubai London Specialty Hospital. Also a “Pledge ribbon” showing your support for having ‘Taken the K-Lynn Pledge. And a “Pledge Card” - on the reverse of which are details of how to promote the pledge and play a real part in this community initiative – i.e. tagging on Facebook, changing Facebook status, changing BBM status, Tweeting about the K-Lynn Pledge.

“Mammography is our best tool for early detection: finding breast cancer in its earliest stages, when the cancer is most treatable. Combined with your doctor’s breast examination and your own breast self-exam, mammography can save your life – and that’s why we’re encouraging the women of the UAE to ‘Take the K-Lynn Pledge.’”

Wholesome Learning

Today, was day 3 for Luella at “Home Grown Children's Eco Nursery”. The excitement is still on…

So what is it all about? What does it says on the “box”?
“Home Grown Children's Eco Nursery is the UAE's first 'Green Thinking' children's nursery, inspired by motherly instincts and the harmony of nature.
The nursery's values are embodied in our philosophy 'Nurtured by Nature'”.

Interested, here’s more…
In practice they have develop a “green Curriculum” based on the British pre-school learning programme, in an environment that generates a respect and awareness for themselves, others and the world around them. All teachers are qualified and specially trained to incorporate ecological concept in their
class room.

What makes it a “Green Nursery”
- Use of non-toxic, eco-friendly toys and outdoor equipment made from sustainable materials.
- Use of green cleaning products to maintain hygiene standards.
- Eco-friendly indoor and outdoor flooring and furniture
- An organic vegetable patch free from pesticides
- Reduced waste by recycling paper, cans and glass and utilising a compost pit for wet garbage that contributes to the organic garden
- Communication encouraged via email or website to save paper
- Encourage parents to participate in conservation and eco-friendly community projects
- Lessons in conservation, preservation, saving rain forests, protecting endangered species, composting, recycling and organic gardening
- Learning to embrace the simple joys of life

The little extras that make a difference.
Every child that enrols at the nursery is paired with one in India from a day shelter that keeps children off the streets. See “Harmony House”. A part of the school fees go to support their education. Today, Luella received her first drawing and a photo from Tattu, a little girl from the sponsored school outside Delhi. It's a wonderful way for Luella to become more involved in another child life and with time understand the difference with those less fortunate.

Starting soon, every child will plant a tree that will have their name plaque on it and they will be responsible for watering and nurturing it. Lovely idea.

Extra curriculum activities like “little linguists” will introduce French and Arabic, “Bendy Babies” is mini version of yoga, “Little Monet” is an introduction to artists and creative expression, “Little green fingers” is about digging in the organic vegetable patch,…

Most of all…

The staff is incredibly kind, thoughtful and passionate. There is a sense of serenity and warmth within the premises. The traditional methods of teaching are totally incorporated with the “green” concept in order to offer the best to our children and encouraging a natural love of learning.

On top of that the co-founder and head of nursery Mrs Lucy Bruce is also the founder of the Delhi-based Harmony House charity. She was winner of the prestigious Emirates Woman of the Year award, in the Humanitarian category in 2010. What an inspirational lady!
